Meet Our Staff
Steven W. Smith, DDS
Dr. Smith was born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah. As a youth, he participated in several sports such as wrestling, soccer and ballroom dancing. He also learned to play the piano which is a hobby he enjoys today. He decided that he wanted to be a dentist while he was in High School. His decision was influenced by his experience getting braces. He realized how much of a difference a good smile made in his self-esteem and social life and wanted to be able to help others improve their smiles. He met his beautiful wife Kenna while in High school and was married soon thereafter. They were blessed with 3 children, Teva 20, Olivia 16, Marcus 9.
Teva is currently a Junior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is pursuing a degree in Biology with a minor in chemistry, and also playing on the school's water polo team. He graduated from Dixon High School where he held the position of Senior class treasurer. While at Dixon, Teva was a student-athlete competing in the sport of wrestling while maintaining a strong GPA.
Olivia is currently a Senior at Dixon High School. She runs track and cross country and plays on the school's varsity soccer team. She enjoys soccer, reading and playing the bass clarinet for her school band.
Marcus is 9 years old and currently working on his masters of Pokemon battling degree while completing his minor in Yu-Gi-Oh combat theory. He enjoys anything Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, Bionacle, or Mario related. He has recently started a mission in Minecraft and will be involved with that for the foreseeable future.
Dr. Smith attended Salt Lake Community College for his associate's degree and completed his dental prerequisites at the University of Utah. He attended the University of Michigan School of Dentistry in 2005 and was awarded a Doctorate in Dental Surgery in 2009. Following his graduation from dental school, he served 4 years as a Navy dentist before associating with a private practice in Leland, NC. He loves having his own practice in Sneads Ferry and helping those in the community in which he lives and has raised his family.
Dr. Smith has had the opportunity to become a member of the American Dental Association as well as the North Carolina Dental Association. He has participated in several continuing education courses and continues to participate in courses to remain current and on the cutting edge of new technologies and concepts in dentistry.
His hobbies include coaching wrestling, diving, racquetball, mountain biking, and being involved with his kids sports programs. He also enjoys gardening, playing piano and spending time with family and friends.
Henrique F. Silva DDS
Dr. Silva was born in Recife, Brazil and moved to the United States at the age of 7. He’s been an avid athlete for his entire life and was a 3-sport varsity athlete in high school playing football, basketball, and soccer. He developed a love for traveling to new places after having the opportunity to travel the country for basketball tournaments, and still enjoys traveling as much as possible today. Dr. Silva was drawn to dentistry in high school because he had a dentist who showed compassion and kindness to individuals in need. This, along with the ability to improve the self-esteem and health of his patients, are the factors that continue to motivate Dr. Silva today.
Dr. Silva graduated with honors from Utah Valley University with a degree in Biology. He then attended the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry where he excelled in various areas of dentistry. During his time at VCU he participated in the research, was a fellowship recipient, and received an award from the International Digital Dental Academy for his work with same day CAD/CAM crowns and bridges. Dr. Silva is a member of the American Dental Association and the North Carolina Dental Association. He is passionate about continuing education and staying up-to-date on the latest innovations in dentistry.
In his free time, Dr. Silva continues to try and perfect his jump-shot and is an avid angler. He hopes to catch every species of fish in the world, and even though he knows that’s likely not possible he likes to dream big! Dr. Silva is married to his best friend Angela and they have two children, Olivia, and Max who keep them very busy. Dr. Silva and his family love living near the coast and being beach bums as often as possible.
Diana was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA along with sister, Rita and parents, who immigrated from Hong Kong in the 1960s. She grew up working in her parent’s Chinese restaurant in North Hollywood. She started her career in dentistry as a dental assistant in a pediatric office, while attending Loyola Marymount University. There, she began to fall in love with the field and felt at home in the dental office. After graduating from LMU with a BS in Biology and minor in Psychology, she felt she had a good foundation to be a dental hygienist.
At Cerritos College, she not only obtained her degree in dental hygiene but was also chosen to present her clinical studies of aromatherapy in the treatment of dental anxiety along with her partner, Annie, to the Dental Hygiene Board of California. For the past 17 years, she has practiced in various offices in California, Hawaii, Germany, and North Carolina.
Here in Jacksonville, she enjoys spending her time with her children, Sean Jr and Madison, and her husband, Sean. You will most likely find them in the soccer fields here in town. On long weekends, they love to camp in neighboring states. They enjoy traveling abroad and exploring the unbeaten path. Most of all, Diana enjoys eating exotic cuisine and shopping at unique boutiques.
Susanne Sanders, RDH
Susanne was born in Virginia, but like many people, moved to Jacksonville due to military at the age of 10. She has made the Jacksonville area her forever home.
Graduating from Jacksonville High in 1986, she went directly into the dental hygiene program and Coastal Carolina Community College, and graduated in 1988. Received her dental hygiene license from the state and has been practicing dental hygiene ever since.
In 1994, she married Lienny Sanders and became a farmer’s wife. Together, they have two boys, Jacob and Nicholas.
Our family is very close and together we love to farm, garden, camp, and enjoy water sports. Lenny and Susanne teach youth group and are very active in church activities.
Susanne is also a bookkeeper, and is the chair for Onslow County women’s committee with Farm Bureau. She loves to craft and volunteer with many organizations.
Mataya comes from a military family, so she's lived in many different places while growing up. After meeting her now husband, Gabe, in NC, they settled in Jacksonville, NC with their two children; Elijah, who is a freshman at White Oak and Leilani who is in fifth grade. Both children are talented soccer players who spend most of their time practicing. Mataya spends most of her free time watching her children play sports and traveling around NC for their tournaments with her husband Gabe.
